During the Edo period, three souvenir shops, Hinaga Uchiwa, Naga-mochi, and Hinaga Tabi, lined the streets of Tokaido's Hinaga no Juku (Inn at Hinaga), and the shops were crowded with people. Among them, "Hinaga Uchiwa" was made by farmers during the off-season, and was well received as one of the souvenirs of the Ise pilgrimage. The handle is rounded and fits well, and feels cool and comfortable in the hand because it is made directly from a single thin bamboo. The bamboo is split into small pieces and woven into an alternating bag shape, which bends like a bow and softly flutters in the wind. Today, only one shop, Inato, makes Hinaga Uchiwa.
